A control system has been developed for a high-quality generating set (150kW) equipped with a two-shaft gas turbine with a variable power turbine nozzle. Because this generating set satisfies stringent frequsncy stability requirements, it can be employed as the direct electric power source for computer centers without using CVCF (Constant Voltage Constant Frequency Power Supply Device). Conventional generating set of this kind have normally been powered by single-shaft gas turbines which larger output shaft inertia than the two-shaft version. Good frequency characteristics have also been realized with the two-shaft gas turbine, which demonstrates superior quick start characteristics and lower fuel consumption under partial load. This paper compares the transient responses of the single-and two-shaft gas turbines using simulation models containing experimental control gains. The results show that the two-shaft engine employing an accurate feed-forward control displays higher frequency control performance than a single-shaft version without this control. The control scheme applies feedforward control to both variable nozzle angle and gas generator speed. Experimental results on the control scheme are also described in this paper.
