MASUDA, K., SHIMOJO, H. and KATSUTA, S., Level of Myoglobin Concentration in Human Vastus Lateralis Muscle : Effect of Training Status. Adv. Exerc. Sports Physiol., Vol.7, No.2 pp47-51, 2001. The present study was carried out to determine whether myogiobin concentration ([Mb]) in human skeletal muscle is affected by physical training status, and to examine the relationship between [Mb} and a range of physiological parametres. All subjectes were healthy young adult males. They were divided into for groups: sedentary individuals (nonACT, n=8), active individuals who used to participate in non-regular recrestional exercise (ACT, n=15), endurange athleters (ENDUR, n-5) and sprinters (SPRINT, n-9). All subjects preformed an incremental cycling exercise test to evaluate their aerobic capacity (peak oxygen uptake: VO2peak). Muscle tissue samples were obtained by the needle biopsy method from the vastus lateralis (VL) muscle. There was a significant difference only between the nonACT(4.19±0.34) and ENDUR groups (5.00±0.54) in the [Mb] (p<0.05). The citrate synthase (CS) activity and VO2peak tended to be higher in order of ENDUR, SPRINT, ACT and nonACT (p<0.05). The [Mb] for all subjects was significantly correlated with VO2peak (r-0.451, p<0.05), CS activity (r-0.441, p<0.01) and the precentage of type Ⅰ fibers (r=0.435, p<0.01). The CS activity also showed a significant relationshiop with VO2peak (r-0.831, p<0.01). These results suggest that the [Mb] in human VL muscle may vary depending on training status, with a concomitant and significant change in the potential rate of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation. The change in the [Mb] in human LV muscle as a result of physical training must, however, be confirmed in further investigations.
