A new methanol-utilizing strain, Methylomonas methanolophila 6R was treated with the mutagen N-methyl-N'-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (NTG), and mutants resistant to aromatic amino acid-analogues were selected. A mutant, strain E431,which was resistant to 1000μg/ml of β-2-thienylalanine, 1000μg/ml of 5-methyltryptophan and 1000μg/ml of 3-aminotyrosine produced 4000μg/ml of phenylalanine, 1100μg/ml of tyrosine and 200μg/mol of tryptophan in mineral salts-methanol medium supplemented with biotin and thiamine, as opposed to the wild type strain which produced 1μg/ml of tryptophan and 3-5μg/ml of tyrosine and phenylalanine.
