An organism which can grow on methanol was isolated. Among the many carbon sources tested, it grew only on methanol and showed no growth on ordinary nutrient media. The cells are Gram-negative, non-sporeforming rods, 0.4-0.8×0.8-2.0μm in size, having a single polar flagellum. Based on its distinctive characteristics, this obligate methanol-utilizing bacterium may be regarded as a new species according to the most recent system of taxonomy, and it has been tentatively named Methylomonas methanolophila nov. sp. Its characteristic responses to some chemicals are described.
