Pythium aphanidermatum causing damping off of cucumber seedlings was detected in water clarifier sludge from a drinking-water plant in the Kanto district. During December 1996 to November 1997, the pathogen was consistently isolated from the sludge at <1.9 CFU ml^-1 of the sludge.
