The growth of bacterial cells immobilized in a photo-crosslinked polymer was estimated on the basis of proteins after hydrolysis of the polymer with alkaline solution. Hydrophobic interaction column chromatography was employed to separate the protein fraction from the hydrolyzed polymer. The amount of cells immobilized in the resin can be precisely estimated on the basis of this procedure.
