The uptake of heavy metals by Azolla pinnata and their subsequent translocation into the fruit bodies of the edible mushroom Pleurotus sajor-caju when grown on such metal-enriched substrates was investigated. A high concentration of heavy metals in the enriched substrate reduced the biological efficiency of mushroom production. The uptake of heavy metals in the substrate as well at their translocation into the fruit bodies increased with an increasing concentration of these metals in the exposed solution and the substrate respectively.
