This paper proposes a new mechanism called Integrated Parsing Engine (IPE) for natural language analysis. The IPE is constructed by combining a Consistency Maintenance Engine (CME) and a Plausibility Maintenance Engine (PME). The CME keeps track of assumptions and their conclusions and maintains the consistency of the belief set, while the PME keeps information about how plausible each assumption is and guides the processing to the most plausible direction. Using IPE as a subsystem, the anthors have implemented an integrated natural language analyzing system. This system can do a search in a manner that takes advantage of both the breadth-first method and depth-first method. It can solve ambiguities very rapidly by using the information obtained from various analyzing levels. Further, since the processing is guided, when two or more explanations exist, it can find the most plausible one by taking account of linguistic or nonlinguistic information.
