Gray scale image is transformed into GBF, i.e. Gray scale Breadth First expression, the convenient intermediate form for the progressive transmission of images. Although the GBF expression results form breadth first traversal of bitwise condensed quadtree for the gray scale image, it is generated directly from the image data array, scanned along the Hilbert curve, without use of quadtree representation. The encoding and decoding algorithms are short and efficient. For the image with N pixels their time is Ο(N)and the additional storage used is Ο(1og N).While GBF expression has the same compression ability as Gray scale Depth First expression (GDF), its encoding and decoding algorithms using the Hilbert scan, are easier for hardware and software implementations.
