Natural language interface processors, i.e. systems providing acceptance capabilities of operation instructions and queries expressed in a natural language, should be developed to permit computer access by casual or untrained users. This paper describes a new natural language processor for database query systems. This paper (a) proposes a world model based on the hierarchical-tree structure of relation tables; (b) provides an overview of the natural language interface processor on the model; (c) briefly discusses the role of each module of the processor; and (d)evaluates this new system. The results show that a database query system with the above capabilities (1) provides Japanese-language retrieval capabilities; (2) can express flexible query expressions including equal or not-equal expressions, larger or smaller expressions, and omission of Japanese function words `Joshis'; and achieves in-dependence from applied domains and database systems.
