Dataflow computer architecture is recognized as the most efficient parallel architecture for the next generation computers. There have been many research projects on dataflow computers under development in Japan, the United States of America and Europe. However, Japan is first in the race to put high-speed dataflow computers to practical use. This paper describes the fundamental characteristics of dataflow computing systems and gives a detailed survey of the progress of the research and development efforts on dataflow computer architecture in Japan.
