The effects of the calcium chloride concentration on the rate of ethanol formation and cell leakage have been studied using Zymomonas mobilis cells immobilized in calcium alginate gel. A 10 wt.% glucose medium was supplemented with CaCl_2 between 0 to 4.0 g/l (anhydrous basis). The following parameters were investigated as a function of CaCl_2 concentration in the medium : ethanol concentration, glucose concentration, free cell concentration, immobilized cell mass, total glucose usage, ethanol yield, maximum ethanol productivity, and maximum glucose usage rate. The cell leakage from the beads decreased with increases in CaCl_2 concentration up to 2.0 g/l, but there was no appreciable chnage in cell leakage beyond this concentration. The rates of ethanol formation and glucose usage were almost the same for the media containing 0 to 1.0 g/l CaCl_2,but the rates decreased drastically with further increases in CaCl_2 concentration.
