A technique is described which involves the use of a hollow fibre membrane module to desalt sugarcane molasses. Pretreatment of the membranes involes the deposition of co-crystals of barium sulphate and a silica complex onto the surface and within the pores of the hollow fibres. Fermentation studies with both Saccharomyces uvarum and Zymomonas mobilis using the desalted molasses showed faster rates of ethanol production and higher overall yields.
