The maximal rate of hydrolysis of cellulose in a solid state by a cellulase of Aspergillus terreus was attained when the moisture regain of the substrate was maintained at 400%.The slower rates of hydrolysis observed at lower levels of moisture than 400% might be due to greater inhibition of the enzyme by reaction products, and those at higher levels of mousiture might be due to greater diffusion of the enzyme from the substrate.
