A mutant strain of Arthrobacter luteus, M13-203,showing increased production of yeast cell wall lytic enzyme was isolated by stepwise selection of mutants from non-growing cells of parent strain B111-1. M13-203 produced 2.6 times more lytic activity in a medium containing dried yeast than the parent. Lytic enzyme was produced by M13-203 in the absence of β-1,3-glucan, which was an inducer for the parent strain. The production by the mutant was enhanced by β-1,3-glucan and ketohexose, and was not decreased in the presence of glucose.
