Addition of fungicides and phenolic compounds to the nutrient medium resulted in marked changes in the extracellular production of neutral and alkaline proteases by Alternaria alternata (Fr.) Keissl. All the fungicides tested were found to inhibit the production and activity of proteases, Brassicol and Bavistin being the most potent. Phenolic compounds, other than ferulic acid, were found to have an inhibitory effect on enzyme production. Phenolic substances added to the reaction mixture were found to cause varying degrees of inhibition of enzyme activity.
