A CDP-choline-producing yeast, the strain N-25-2,which was isolated in our laboratory as a hydrocarbon-assimilating yeast was classified in the genus Candida. This strain gave a high yield of cells from hydrocarbons and other carbon sources, and accumulated a large amount of lipid in the cells. To compare this strain with other yeasts, the CDP-choline productivity by lyophilized cells of several yeasts was tested. Other hydrocarbon-assimilating yeasts of the genera Torulopsis and Brettanomyces showed comparably high productivities of CDP-choline to Candida sp. N-25-2. Some Saccharomyces yeasts also showed a high productivity.Favorable cultural conditions were sought for the preparation of yeast cells capable of producing CDP-choline. The CDP-choline productivity of Candida sp. N-25-2 was found to be affected by aeration and carbon sources in the culture medium.
