With a view to utilizing the bioluminescence of luminous bacteria industrially, especially for attracting fish, the immobilization of Photobacterium Phosphoreum MT-10201 was studied.Sodium alginate and calcium ion were the best carrier and cross-linking reagent found for immpbilization of the luminous bacterium, and 3 % of sodium alginate and 0.4 M clacium chloride solution gave the highest light intensity after immobilization. The light intensity of luminous material containing immobilized luminous bacteria depended on the cell concentration of culture broth before immobilization. The strongest light intensity was obtained by immobilizing luminous bacteria in a fresh medium, in which case intensity reached a maximum in six days, suggesting that the luminous bacteria grew in the calcium alginate gel.
