A bacterium was isolated from soil in a medium containing tobias acid(2-naphthyl-amine-1-sulfonic acid)as the sole carbon source. The organism was identified as Flavobacterium capsulatum. The organism could utilize tobias acid not only as a carbon source but also as a nitrogen source. In the presence of glucose, however, the utilization of tobias acid was incomplete, and tobias acid was not utilized or utilized at a very slow rate if at all in the presence of glucose and NH_4NO_3. The organism could utilize 1-naphthalenesulfonic acid, 2-naphthalenesulfonic acid and 2-naphthol-1-sulfonic acid in addition to tobias acid.
