Callianassa crassa Rathbun, 1919, a fossil tha-lassinid shrimp from the Miocene of Panama was pre-occupied by Callianassa crassa A. Milne Edwards, 1870 from the Eocene of France; therefore, Glaessner (1929) renamed it Callianassa rathbunae. I have recently discovered that Callianassa (Callichirus) rath-bunae Schmitt, 1935, a living species from the WestAtlantic, is a junior primary homonym of Callianassarathbunae Glaessner, 1929. Schmitt's species is nowassigned to a different genus, Neocallichirus Sakai,1988 (see Manning and Felder, 1991). Therefore, thenew replacement name Neocallichirus maryae, for thelate Mary J. Rathbun of the United States NationalMuseum, is here proposed for Neocallichirus rathbunae (Schmitt, 1935).
