In Minehama elementary school, the class was designed for the purpose of a better understanding of the relationship between the grain size of river-bed material and the tractive force. Shimatokkari river which was well known to the school children, was chosen as a teaching material. In the first place the longitudinal cross section of Shimatokkari river was drawn by the school children. This cross section showed that the Minehama jyussen bridge separated the upper reaches of the river from the lower reaches and the gradient of both reaches were clearly different each other. In the second place field work was carried out. On each observation point, the biggest stone was selected from the river-bed material and its major axis was measured by the school children. Later a briefing session on the survey results was held in the class and then the guest teacher tried to explain the tractive force of the river to the school children. He drew the slope of the Unabetsu skiing ground on the longitudinal cross section and made them examine the gradient between the upper reaches of the river, the lower reaches and the slope of the skiing ground. After some animated discussion, he concluded by saying that the grain size of the river-bed material at each observation point was mainly determined by the gradient, that is, the tractive force of the river on the point.
