In resent years, bronchial asthma has come to be regarded as a chronic inflammatory disease of the respiratory tract. The Allergic Disease Treatment Guidelines, published in Japan in 1993 (and subsequently revised in 1995, 1998, 2000 and 2003), define bronchial asthma as "characterized by extensive airway obstruction and airway inflammation of various degrees of severity." In this study, we focused on the allergic inflammatory response of asthma, on the role of cytokines, chemical mediators closely associated with the inflammatory response, and on the adhesion molecules which play a prominent role in eosinophil migration and accumulation. We also studied the effects of Saibokuto (a Japanese herbal medicine, effective for treating the respiratory disease such as bronchial asthma) on eosinophils and adhesion molecules. Although the allergic inflammatory response in bronchial asthma involves a wide variety of inflammatory cells, eosinophils play an important and central role in this response. Cytokines are closely associated with the differentiation, proliferation, and activation of these eosinophils. It is thus of considerable importance to suppress the production of the cytokines which are associated with eosinophilic function and to block the points of action of these cytokines in order to prevent the development and further aggravation of asthma. Saibokuto suppressed the production of cytokines, the prolongation of eosinophil, the expression of adhesion molecules or to block their points of action. These findings suggest that Saibokuto could be considered as one of a new class of anti-asthmatic drugs becouse of its influence on eosinophils and adhesion molecules.
