「アイロンかけ」教材を科学的に展開させるための実験的一考察

As an experiment to conduct classes scientifically, a comparative study of 'ironing' with and without the protecting cloth has been made. For the sample cloths, white, plain fabrics of cotton, wool and polyester, which are generally used in classes of elementary and junior high schools, have been chosen. Nylon fabric has also been added to these materials for reference. Each sample has undergone either dry ironing treatment with and without the protecting cloth or dry heat treatment. Then, shrinkage, density, scorching, and breaking strength and elongation of each sampl have been measured, with the following results : (1) concerning density and shrinkage, no change has been observed in each material except for nylon. (2) Little change has been seen in strength and elongation of cotton and strength of wool. The remarkable decrease has been observed, in elongation of wool, and strength and elongation of polyester after sixty-time ironing treatment (in 15 minutes) without the protecting cloth. (3) As for scorching, the great difference has been observed in each material between the samples ironed with the protecting cloth and those treated without the protecting cloth. In both cases, however, the gradual increase in scorching has been odserved with the increase of the frequency and duration of ironing treatment. To sum up, the necessity of the use of the protecting cloth has been made clear by this experiment, though the result is not the same as to all the materials tested. The data obtained might be of some use in teaching 'ironing' scientifically as a teaching material in home economics classes in elementary and junior high schools.
