The propress in synthetic chemistry has brought about remarkable changes in the way we manage and prepare our clothing. Machines are getting more and more used in sewing, but there still remains room for the hand to play an important part. Training in standard hand sewing at the elementary school level will not only improve their needlework, but also will develop their deft-handedness, and thus it means the first step to fundamentals of needlework. Which to use, long needle or a short one. in an initial step to sewing; which to use properly for boys or girls? In order to settle these problems, 68 fifth graders of both sexes have been subjected to sewing with a long needle and a short one three minutes. Points of investigation have been fourfold : 1. Length of cloth covered 2. Length of a stitch 3. Number of stitches 4. Number of irregular stitches It has been found that : 1. Whether they use a short needle or a long one, difference of sex does not tell much on their work in each of the four points mentioned above. 2. No matter which one is used, boys make a longer stitch and more irregular, but, taken all together, there is little difference between boys and girls in their workmanship. 3. Given a ten minutes' interval, borh boys and girls may cover a greater length of cloth. Finally it may be added that all beginners seem to find a long needle a hundred percent preferable and much easier to handle.
