In this paper, we propose a fault detection algorithm for rail mounted quay side gantry crane by using observation technique. The states of gantry crane system are measured by using sensor and compared to the estimated states which are obtained by observer. By using compared state errors, we can detect the faults of sensor or machinary of crane systems.
