This study examines the heat flux effect on the surface integrity of a ground component of various materials. The results confirmed that the heat flux with a specific triangular shape gives the best fit between the experimental and theoretical profiles in up-grinding mode. An unstable heat flux had a detrimental effect on the surface integrity of the ground component such as poor surface finish and uneven hardened layer. It was found that the penetration and stability of the heated zone in the subsurface depended highly on the material used. When the thermal input exceeds a critical value, the Young's Modulus of the grinding wheel decreased significantly, varying with the temperature rise exponentially.
