Two-phase heat transfer of water in a small diameter tube, ID= 1.45 mm, is experimentally examine under sub-atmospheric pressure and low flow rate conditions LocaL heat transfer coefficients are obtained for pressure of 22, 50 and 80 kPa and for a range of mass flux 20 to 90 kg/m^2s. Higher heat transfer coefficients are obtained at moderate heat flux and low flow rate condition than the pool boiling correlation of Stephan-Abdelsalam. Using a flow pattern map developed from adiabatic experiments with air-water mixtures, the dominant flow pattern in the tube is found to be a slug-annular or annular. Heat transfer mechanism of thin liquid film evaporation gives rise to the high heat transfer coefficient at a low and moderate heat flux. Comparison of the experimental results with existing flow boiling correlations is also discussed.
