The objective of the present study is to analyze the unsteady flow fields of non-Newtonian fluid by the computer simulation and to validate the numerical results by using the results of the particle image velocimetry system. The continuity equation and equations of motion with the constitutive equations for non-Newtonian fluid are used to simulate the flow fields. As a constitutive equation of non-Newtonian fluid the Carreau model is employed. The finite volume predictions are used to solve the governing equations for the three-dimensional flow field in the circular tube. The tube wall is considered as an elastic material to take into account the displacement of the wall due to the pressure variation. Major variables used in the present study are the phase angle of the pressure wave, amplitude variation of the pressure wave, rheological effects of non-Newtonian fluid, and the elastic modulus of the tube wall. For the given inlet boundary conditions the velocity waveforms, the pressure waveforms, and the wall shear stresses along the tube are computed. The numerical results are compared with the experimental results of the particle image velocimetry. The results of non-Newtonian fluid in the elastic tube may be used for the analysis of blood flow in the human arteries.
