The objective of the present study is to compare the particle image processing results with the acoustic optic modulator system and the moving searching area algorithm. The unsteady flows in the circular and bifurcated tubes are visualized by the particle image velocimetry with the acoustic optic modulator and the moving searching area algorithm. The cross-correlation method in combination with the moving searching area algorithm is applied to the image processing of the flow visualization. The particle image velocimetry with two-frame method using moving searching area algorithm is used to visualize the pulsatile flows in the circular and bifurcated tubes. For visualization of the pulsatile flow using the acoustic optic modulator system, the measured distances of particles in the two consecutive images must be 20-30 pixel and less. When the flow field is very fast or the distance of particles is over 20-30 pixel, the velocity vector is hardly calculated by the conventional cross correlation algorithm. The cross-correlation method with the moving searching area algorithm is applied to obtain velocity vectors of unsteady flow.
