An experimental study is performed on the effects of the initial temperature of a fluid, T_0 on free convection heat transfer in a stably stratified fluid. The stratified layer is formed in a rectangular container using sucrose aqueous solution, and is heated laterally from one side at temperature T_h and cooled from the other side at temperature T_c. The experiments are conducted for both cases of T_0 = T_c and T_c < T_0 < T_h to investigate the effects of T_0. After the onset of heating and cooling a series of cellular convection layers is generated at the heating wall for T_0 = T_c, while it is generated at both heating and cooling walls for T_c < T_0 < T_h. Then the resulting growth of the layers and the heat transfer coefficient are different between these cases, especially under the condition of the initially generated cells being thick.
