The inverse conjugate heat transfer problem has been solved to determine the spacewise variation of an unknown wall heat flux in a single screw extruder. To overcome the difficulty in obtaining the value of q (z) at final position z = L, the inverse analysis is performed by the alternate use of the regular and modified conjugate gradient method. The temperature readings for this inverse problem should be taken from the flow inside the channel at several locations along the extrusion direction for the inverse analysis of the present work. In the present inverse analysis, however, these data are simulated numerically by adding numerical noises to the actual data obtained from the solutions of the direct problem with no noise. The heat flux added on the barrel is chosen in the form of triangular, stepwise, and sinusoidal functions.
