Plate and shell heat exchanger (P&SHE) are widely applied to refrigeration and air conditioning systems such as evaporators or condensers for their higher efficiency and compactness. In order to set up the database for the design of the P&SHE, heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for single phase flow of water were experimentally and numerically investigated in this study. Single phase heat transfer coefficients were measured for turbulent water flow in a plate and shell heat exchangers by Wilson plot method. Numerical work was conducted using the FLUENT code. The study includes the flow distribution, thermal distribution and the pressure distribution in the channel of plate and shell heat exchanger. The results of CFD analysis are compared with experimental data. The maximum difference of friction factor and Nusselt number in plate side are 4.5% and 3.3%, and those of shell side are 7.0% and 5.8%, respectively. Therefore, the CFD analysis is shown to effectively predict the performance of plate and shell heat exchanger. Single-phase heat transfer correlations have been proposed in a plate and shell heat exchanger.
