Computational fluid dynamic(CFD) analysis of thermal flow in a combustion chamber of municipal solid waste(MSW) incinerator provides crucial insight on the incinerator performance. However, interrelation of the gas flow field with the burning waste bed has not been adequately treated in CFD models. A strategy for combined simulation of the waste bed combustion and the furnace gas flow was introduced. A waste bed combustion model was constructed to predict the progress of combustion in the bed and corresponding generation of the gas phase species, in which the waste bed was treated as a packed bed of homogeneous fuel particles. When coupled with CFD, it provides boundary conditions of the gas flow field over the grate, and receives radiative heat flux onto the bed from CFD. The combined simulation successfully predicted the physical processes of the waste bed combustion and its interaction with the flow fields for various design and operating parameters.
