Emission of PCDD/Fs (Poly-chlorinated Dibenzo-p-Dioxin/Dibenzo-Furans) in the flue gas of a MSW (municipal solid waste) incinerator is an integral result of the process design and operation parameters. Minimization of the emission level is achieved through the complete combustion in the furnace, and adequate management of the flue gas treatment system. Thermal flow performance of the incinerator was investigated using the CFD analysis and quantitative measure of the combustion improvement was presented. The pollutant formation and destruction was predicted based on a temperature-time history model, utilizing submodels of formation, adsorption and destruction. Design and operation parameters which affect the combustion efficiency and the flue-gas temperature time history were identified, and their relation to the overall performance of the incinerator/flue gas treatment system was elucidated.
