Fukuoka University has equipped a cogeneration system consisting of a micro gas turbine generator and an absorption chiller since March 2001. The objective equipping the system is to let the students to experience the operations of the system and to study the thermodynamic analysis of a cogeneration system. The present paper will describe the performance of the system and the results of the thermodynamic analysis. The micro gas turbine is fueled with Natural Gas. The rated electric power output of the generator is 26 kW at a maximum engine speed (96000 rpm). The generator operates under the grid connected operation. The output voltage and the frequency of the generator is 200 volt AC and 60 Hz, respectively. The absorption chiller is driven by the heat energy of the exhaust gas from the micro gas turbine and does not have an additional heat source. The heat input from the exhaust gas was calculated with the flow rate of the [figure] exhaust gas and the enthalpy drop of the exhaust gas passing through the heat recovery unit, which operates as a desorber of the absorption chiller. The gas flow rate was estimated from the oxygen concentration of the exhaust gas by assuming that the combustion of fuel with excess air should be complete. The working fluid of the absorption chiller is aqueous lithium bromide. As the electric power output increased, the specific fuel consumption decreased and the flow rate of the exhaust gas increased. The thermal efficiency of the micro turbine was about 24% at a lower heating value base (Fig. Al) One half of the fuel energy was recovered in the absorption chiller (Fig. A2). The coefficient of performance of the absorption chiller was 0.7 to 0.9 when the chilled water was obtained at 8 degree C. The ratio of heat output to heat input as a water heater was about 0.85 to 1.0 when the hot water was obtained at 45 to 50 degree C. [figure]
