In this paper, thermal adhesion of thermoplastic polymer materials was experimentally investigated from thermal engineering and polymer science point of view, and a novel technique for polymer material selection process was proposed according to the obtained result. As is empirically known, a thermoplastic polymer material softens with temperature increase and it starts to adhere on a solid surface above certain temperature. However the adhesion mechanism of polymer materials has not been elucidated well, and the relationship between the material properties and adhesion behavior has not been investigated from thermal engineering point of view. In this study, thermal adhesion behavior of polymer of view. In this study, thermal adhesion behavior of polymer materials is precisely examined through temperature and displacement measurement as shown in Figure A1. Three types of commercial grade polymers (polyethylene, polypropylene and polystyrene) were used as the test material. To measure the contact interface temperature between the polymer materials and solid heating plate made of CaF_2,infrared thermography was used. Michelson interferometer system was used to measure the micro-scale displacement of the polymer surface contacting with the heating plate. The results showed that dominant factor of the adhesion was the contact interface temperature, and its value was above the glass transition temperature of the material. The crystallinity of the material apparently affected the adhesion temperature, then the actual adhesion temperature of semicrystalline material was much higher than glass transition temperature of the material. The results showed that actual contact surface area was increased with contacting time. Viscoelastic property of the polymer melt and thermal diffusion into the melt caused this time dependent adhesion behavior. According to the obtained results, a separation process for a mixture of polymer materials was proposed. [figure]
