To clarify the load-carrying capacities of austenitic stainless steel SUS304 gears with plasma nitriding, radical nitriding and plasma carburizing, a two-roller test and a gear test were carried out under forced lubrication. From the experimental results the significant effect of plasma diffusion processing on the seizure resistance of the rollers and the scoring resistance of the gears was recognized. Both the seizure resistance of the rollers and the scoring resistance of the gears were larger in the order of plasma carburizing, radical nitriding and plasma nitriding. In the two-roller test, although the coefficient of friction of the plasma carburized rollers was higher than that of untreated rollers, the seizure resistance of the former was at least 2.1 times as large as that of the latter. In the gear test, the scoring resistance of plasma-carburized gears was at least 11 times as large as that of the untreated gears.
