Recently there have been increasing interests in vibration and deflection control of structural systems using smart materials. In order to realize these functions of smart structures, many researchers have studied functional materials and their characteristics, analysis methods of smart structures, sensor and actuator placement problems, controller designs, and many other relevant research topics. This article presents some efforts, conducted at ISVC (Intelligent Systems and Vibration Control) Lab. in KAIST (Korea Advanced Institute of Science and technology), toward our common interest, the realization of smart structures. This article introduces three research results recently conducted at ISVC Lab. The first one is about the numerical analysis on one of very complicated phenomena, the nonlinear thermo-piezo-elastic behavior of piezo-laminated plates. The second part presents an effective vibration control method using shunted piezoelectric materials. Finally, vibration control results using piezo ceramic actuators and optical fiber sensors are introduced.
