Basic concepts and elemental developments of new active composites fabricated by using structural materials are described in this study. CFRP prepreg was laminated on aluminum plate, of which unidirectional actuation was realized by electrical resistance heating of carbon fiber in the CFRP layer due to large difference of coefficient of thermal expansion between CFRP and aluminum in the fiber direction while it is close to each other in the transverse direction. SiC continuous fiber/aluminum composite thin plate was also laminated on unreinforced aluminum plate and availability of this laminate as an active material was ascertained. Sensors to be embedded in the active materials were also developed as follows : (1) Fiber optic deformation sensor was fabricated by embedment of pre-notched optical fiber in matrix material and fracture of it at the notch in it. (2) A simple temperature and strain sensor in aluminum matrix was fabricated by embedment of NiO/Ni composite fiber. SiC/Ni active composite was also tried to be fabricated by the same method as that of SiC/Al system using aluminum insert. Its curvature increased with increasing temperature up to higher than 1200K and availability of it as a high temperature active material was ascertained.
