In this paper, the characteristics of crack closure and mechanical behaviors of shape memory alloy (SMA) fiber reinforced composite subjected to thermal stress are investigated. For this purpose, three types of polystyrene matrix composite reinforced by TiNi fiber with different pseudoelasticity and shape memory effect at room temperature are fabricated. Thermal test is performed by changing the range of applied temperature in test chamber from 233K to 353K. Two different kinds of heating methods are used in this study for creation of shape memory effect associated with phase transformation of SMA fiber. One of heating methods is by electric current and the other is by temperature change in test chamber. The behaviors of crack closure and mechanical properties under tensile load at each test conditions are discussed by analyzing the characteristic of photoelastic fringe patterns near the crack tip of specimen. In addition, suitable SMA heating conditions for phase transformation under low temperature are found.
