As is well known, the dissolusion of cementite grobules into austenite is very slow, and in the case of annealing or quenching the cold rolled fine spring steel of grobular cementite structure, the time of heating is a very important factor. In this paper, the influence of heating time on the tensile strength of annealed as well as of quenched and tempered fine spring steels (0.45 mm. thick) are studied and the following conclusions are obtained : 1. In annealing, the strength is remarkably improved with the increase of the heating time. 2. In quenching followed by tempering, the strength is not so influenced by the dissolusion of the grobular cementite as by the grain size which grows rapidly during heating, consequently the heating time must be as short as possible.
