In an attempt to clear the immunological mechanism in various respiratory diseases the serum protein fractions and serum immunoglobulins were undertaken in 40 normal control subjects and 110 patients with respiratory diseases. In addition, the correlation coefficients were determined between serum protein fractions and serum immunoglobulins (IgG, IgA, IgM). Immunoglobulin levels were determined quantitatively by a radial immunodiffusion plate method (Hyland). Serum protein analysis were carried out by cellulose acetate electrophoresis. The results were as follows: 1) Immunoglobulin levels in normal young subjects (18-22 yrs.) were found to be 1289 ± 189 mg/dl for lgG; 259 ± 41 mg/dl for lgA; 118 ± 22 mg/dl for lgM. Normal old levels (60-70 yrs.) were found 1402 ± 178 mg/dl for lgG; 290 ± 70 mg/dl for lgA; 105 ± 25 mg/dl for lgM. 2) Immunoglobulin levels of lgG and lgA were increased in patients with a variety of respiratory diseases, including pneumonia, chronic bronchitis, infectious asthma and infectious pneumoconiois. The serum lgA levels, however, decreased and the lgG levels were markedly increased in active pulmonary tuberculosis. The lgA levels were elevated in chronic pulmonary emphysema, whereas the serum lgG and lgM levels were not altered. 3) The levels of lgG, lgA and lgM were markedly dicreased in patients who had been administrated corticosteroids continually for a long time. 4) The correlation coefficients were significantly high (r=0.718, p<0.01) between γ-globulin and lgG, but not in the others. This fiinding suggests that an increase in serum immunoglobulins can occur without a corresponding increase in serum protein fractions, except relationship between lgG and γ-globulin.
