The determination methods of plasma kinins and the related enzymes were reviewed with 67 references in connection with their roles in physiological and pathological states. Free kinins in plasma are not so easy to be determined, because of the strong activity of the kinin destroying enzymes and the easy activation of the kinin-forming enzymes in plasma. However, the definite increase of the plasma kinin activity has been proved in some pathological states. The kinin-destroying activity can be determined without difficulty in the presence of soya bean trypsin inhibitor. One of the problems in the determination of the kinin-forming activity in plasma is how to obtain a substrate for assay. The usage of an unsuitable substrate leads to a false conclusion. The deficiency of the plasma kallikrein inactivator was found in a patient ofhereditary angioneurotic edema. The determination method of the total kininogen in plasma has been established. While the presence of two kininogens has been proved in the plasma of many species, kininogen I is presumed to be consumed in pathological states. In near future, the depletion of the kininogen in advance may clarify a role of plasma kinin in pathological states, and further the prevention of the states may be done by the depletion of the kininogen.
