In recent hard disk drives with very narrow track pitch, the seek traveling distance must be expressed with a noninteger number of tracks, because the dynamic offset of each head tracking cannot be neglected. For realizing this noninteger-type seek operation, the repeated approximation method of seek distance is developed by assuming a controlled seek time. Further more, to obtain constant seek time, new high-order smoothing trajectories and a precision seek controller with seek distance correction are designed. The new trajectories have zero values of high-order differential coefficients at a seek-termination point for rapid settling and minimum vibration excitation. The proposed seek controller using a DSP contains a normalized trajectory generator, the seek distance calculator, scaling factor corrector using seek distance, and velocity feedback. The validity of this noninteger-type seek controller is confirmed experimentally.
