The error motion of a machine tool spindle during actual cutting conditions and the roundness profile of the workpiece were measured. Then the relationship between them was investigated quantitatively. New measuring apparatus for spindle rotation accuracy by the three-point method developed for this purpose was utilized. As a result of the experiments, the characteristics of the spindle error motion measured under driving conditions both with and without cutting, the influence of the cutting condition, the amplitude ratio of the error motion and the roundness have been made clear. The amplitude ratio of the error motion to the roundness obtained is about 0.55 for a brass workpiece and 0.8 for a steel workpiece. Furthermore, the corresponding state of the frequency components of error motion and roundness has been examined by applying spectrum analysis.
