The strength effects of coated metal at a copper surface on cutting process was experimentally examined. Three types of solder with different strength for coating metal were used. The chip thickness ratio increased with increase in the strength of the solder layer and also in the size of the layer. Then, the chip thickness ratio of solders was found to be extremely larger than that of the copper under same conditions. Considering the strength and chip thickness ratio, qualitative tendency cnsistent with experimental results was obtained.
