The effects of a 60 Sn solder overlaid at the copper surface were studied experimentally on the cutting force and on the chip thickness ratio. The presence of the boundary layer between the solder and copper produced a higher chip thickness ratio and reducd the cutting force. It has been reported that similar effects are found when fatty acids are applied to the surface of a copper or alminumspecimen. It can be demonstrated that an increase in the size of the solder layer also increases the chip thickness ratio.
