The natural frequency and the mode of vibration of square and rectangular plates with a circular hole on the center line are computed by the finite element method (FEM) and are observed experimentally. The boundary couditions of the plates are restrained symmetrical points supported, symmetrical points fixed, four edges supported and four edges clamped. The natural frequencies of plates are considered from the first mode to the sixth mode. In the mode of symmetric vibration with respect to the x-axis, the natural frequency of the plates decreases with increase in the size of the hole at first, then reaches the minimum frequency, and afterwards, continuously increases with the size of the hole. In the case of this mode of vibration, there exists a size of the hole where the natural frequency remains constant irrespective of the position of the hole. In the range of smaller hole size, the natural frequency is minimally influenced by the position of the hole, but in the range of larger hole size, the natural frequency is greatly influenced by the position of the hole. In the asymmetric vibration with respect to the x-axis, the natural frequency of the plates continuously decreases with the size of the hole. In these cases, the natural frequencies are slightly influenced by the position of the hole.
