Using a two-disk machine, the processes leading to the occurrence of a scoring were investigated in detail, under four different conditions of asperity interaction brought about by combinations of the direction of machining marks (circumferential or axial) and the drive ratio of two rollers (integral 2 and hunting 1.95). It was found that scoring limits are markedly influenced by the conditions of asperity interaction, because of the existence of a difference in the state of oil-film formation and the severity of local heat generation at the asperity contacts.
