The authors have carried out running test of spur gears, measuring the tooth strain and the electrical resistance of lubricating film between tooth surfaces. When the initial roughness of tooth surface is larger than the theoretical thickness of elastohydrodynamic oil-film, it is observed in the case of gear ratio 1 ( an integral number) that immediately after the start of running a metallic contact takes place, but gradually an EHD oil-film comes to be built up and is almost completely formed after a long running. This formation of an oil-film is considered to be owing to impressions as replica of micro-geometry of the tooth surfaces of hard gear on the surfaces of soft gear in regions near the pitch lines as well as smoothing of the surface irregularities in regions of large sliding ratio. Influence of dynamic load upon the oil-film-formation is also recognized clearly. As a result, it is suggested that the asperity interaction and the occurrence of pitting are restrained owing to the replica impression in the case of an integral gear ratio.
